About the Owner
Sera always wanted to be a painter growing up. She had an eye for composition and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world. At Antioch College, Sera switched majors from fine art to environmental science and began creating and designing with nature instead of paint. Her studies in horticulture, permaculture, ecology and sustainable development led her to Oregon where she worked in the fields of horticulture, agriculture and environmental education during the day. At night, she worked for a high-end catering company downtown who had their own art department. After working the front-of-the-house for 8 years Sera made the switch to the art department and learned how to arrange flowers and decor for large events. She loved the freedom and creativity of it all, and knew she had found her calling, combining color, texture, shape and composition with flowers and plants!
Once Sera went out on her own and started Hyacinth Orange, she decided she would honor the earth and her passion for sustainability and buy flowers and plants directly from local growers in the Pacfic Northwest. Of course, this means she works primarily with what’s currently in-season, which defines her signature style: earthy, unique, wild and magical. She prides herself on getting creative with the season’s bounty while maintaining the theme and vibe of the client. (More info in the flowers section.)
Hyacinth Orange also operates a botanic design and maintenence service (AKA Plantscaping) for Portland businesses. Sera has always had a green thumb; from outdoor gardening and permaculture, to houseplants and terrariums, she has a natural ability to decorate with plants as well as keep them looking amazing! She finds taking care of plants, and gardening, to be one of the most relaxing and meditative activities, so naturally had to incorporate her love of all things botanical into her business. Above all, Hyacinth Orange values sustainability, diversity, accessibility, equality and equity for all. Our commitment to eco-floristry and community is a guiding principle of our business model.
